An enduring vision
I had a dream or rather vision last night, an enduring dream about true freedom spilling into the day. My dreams are not all altogether pleasant, but this one was, is. It focused on many things I’ve been busy with for many years. It goes like this.
Today’s inhuman society is totally unsustainable, is anti-sustainable. We need to scale down human society in drastic, beyond drastic ways. What is necessary for us to survive and to have a truly good life go far beyond any current popular political direction, beyond what the right wing, the centrist, the left or any existing green party have on their political agenda. We have for so long now been caught in a trap of our own making, a cruel, oppressive and suicidal society. We must reject it and all its ways.
Discarding capitalism is just the start. Stopping our destruction of nature and all life is just the start.
We must in short create a society people want to live in, and not run away from, one with true equality, where no one is left out, and no one is favored by the system.
Be aware that I’m talking about simple, very much available, easy to implement political solutions here. They are not hard to implement at all. If there is a will, there is a way.
We must pull the wilderness into the city, and stop altogether pushing the city into the wilderness. The wilderness must be our ideal life, not the horrible city, a place hostile to all life. We must rewild all places of concrete, plastic, glass and asphalt, clad the city and all its buildings in green, in plants able to give us food and shelter. Every building should be covered by plants and solar panels. Any given neighborhood and community should be self-sustainable, autonomous, able to provide all necessities to its people within walking distance. The two mentioned solutions are just the start of what could, what will transform human society. The plants will insulate the buildings and houses, and provide food, easily. The solar panels can easily supplant existing roof panels. They are just as enduring and solid and not more expensive.
I’ve been a part of an exchange program of locally produced vegetables for years. It works. That works, too.
There are practical problems we must overcome, there always is. There is a need for an initial public investment, since most people just can’t afford the cost. All new buildings and houses should be made with these solutions, of course. Once the system is up and running, it is self-sustaining, and people will also liberate themselves from greedy businesses, from current food and electricity providers robbing us blind. Everything necessary to sustain life will be in our hands.
These and similar solutions can be implemented in any society (like it was in ancient Babylon), but the current technological level makes it somewhat easier. Properly done, a given building can actually «produce» more electricity than it needs to sustain the people living there, and an abundance of food. Plants can grow both inside and outside, also through a process called hydroponics. Plants can grow in water, using far less water. So much are unknown, concealed from people in general, by an establishment not wanting them to attain true independence.
All of it is also possible to implement by poor people without public funding, through community cooperation, voluntary work, crowdfunding and similar. The possibilities are endless. There will certainly be hurdles, but doing nothing, giving up the fight against an oppressive and suicidal establishment should never be an option.
To summarize: we will save ourselves from extinction, and create a truly fabulous and enduring, sustainable society while doing it.
We have the means to transform our society. Let’s do so. Let’s start immediately.
